Thomas Kern (Swiss, 1965). 1987 he graduates from the Department of Photography at the Zurich School of Art and Design. In the course of his education he has worked for different studios in fields as different as fashion, stillife, architecture and industrial photography. He started working freelance and expanded his range of experience with working as a camera assistant on documentary films and as a video cameraman working for television and industrial productions. Since 1989 he is working exclusively as a photojournalist and in 1990 he subsequently became a founding member of the photographers agency Lookat. The implications of conflict on the daily life of people has been one of the continuous threads throughout Thomas work. Northern Ireland, Kurdistan, the war and break-up of Yugoslavia have been major topics. He has covered many social and cultural subjects, often related to current affairs subjects throughout the Middle East. 1998 he relocated from Zürich to San Francisco his focus shifted tp the americas while he still visited Iran, Libya and Mali for major stories. Realizing the impact that the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center had on the American psyche, Thomas decided to embark on a project to further explore his adopted homeland. In 2006 Thomas has moved back to be based in Switzerland.
